I ENTERED COB FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE SPRING OF THIS YEAR, (I HAVE BEEN OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW) I MANAGED TO PAY MY ENTIRE TUITION, WHICH WAS OVER $1200 OUT OF MY OWN POCKET. IN THE SPRING MY GPA WAS A 3.70. SO I DECIDED TO APPLY FOR THE GOVT.'S NATIONAL AWARD FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR, (FALL 2010). I HAVE 7 BGCESE'S WITH C AND ABOVE, (INCLUSIVE OF ENGLISH AND MATH). WHEN I INIITIALLY REGISTERED FOR MY CLASSES MY BILL WAS 1675, OR THEREABOUT, I WENT TO THE MINISTRY'S OFFICE AND CARRIED ALL OF THE RELEVANT DOCUMENTS THAT WAS ASKED FOR (APPLICATION FORM, REFERENCES, BGCSE RESULTS, COB TRANSCRIPT). INITIALLY, AFTER CARRYING THEM THERE I WAS TOLD TO RETURN WITHIN A WEEK FOR A VERIFICATION LETTER, WHEN I DID RETURN THE FOLLOWING WEEK I WAS TOLD THAT I COULDN'T GET THE LETTER, AND THAT I COULD NOT GET IT UNTIL AUGUST. THE LADY ALSO SEEM TO IMPLY THAT IT WAS NO GURANTEE THAT I WOULD GET THE AWARD, EVEN THOUGH I MORE THAN MET ALL OF THE REQUIREMENTS AND HAD NEVER RECIEVED ANY ASSISTANCE BEFORE. SHE SAID THAT THEY HAD TO WAIT UNTIL THE GOVT. BUDGET'S COMMUNICATION AND SHE SAID I SHOULD PAY MY COB BILL, SO THEY DON'T DROP MY CLASSES, AND THEN IF I DO GET THE AWARD, THEN THEY WOULD REFUND ME. WELL NEEDLESS TO SAY, I WASN'T ABLE TO COME UP WITH 1600 PLUS DOLLARS, SO MY CLASSES WERE DROPPED. (LUCKLY, JUST ABOUT ALL OF MY CLASSES I WANT TO GO INTO, THERE IS STILL SOME SPACE IN)
SO BASICALLY MY QUESTION IS, I THOUGHT THE NATIONAL AWARD OFFERED BY THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION TO COB WAS A GURANTEE, ONCE YOU MET ALL OF THEIR REQUIREMENTS, (5 BGCSE'S WITH C AND ABOVE AND KEPT YOUR COB GPA ABOVE 3.0, AND TAKE AT LEAST 12 CREDITS), IS IT POSSIBLE, EVEN IF YOU MEET THOSE REQUIREMENTS TO STILL BE DENIED???
AND THEN, SAYING THAT THIS IS MY FIRST TIME APPLYING FOR THE AWARD, HOW LONG IS THE WAIT, BEFORE I KNOW IF I GET THE AWARD OR NOT???? DOES IT MAKE SENSE TO TRY AND SOMEHOW FIND THE MONEY TO PAY MY TUITION AND THEN HOPE I GET THE AWARD, AND WAIT FOR A REFUND???
JUST LOOKING TO SEE IF ANYONE ELSE HAS GONE THRU SOMETHING SIMILIAR????
THANKS |
Boy I dont know I think they may have changed it since I was there. though, I need clarification on this award.
If COB requires 5BGCSEs with C and above to get in...and the govt gives you a scholarship if you have 5BGCSEs with C and above...then shouldn't that mean most students tuition's would be paid for? If so thats not a bad deal.
When I was there the MOE had a award but I dont think it was a guarantee. Also it was only applicable if you were taking 12 credits of 100-200 level classes.
Financial Aid is best persons to talk to. _________________

Yep, that's the award I think am referring to. The one, where you are required to have 5 BGCSE's with C and above, inclusive of Math and English, and once you keep your GPA above 3.0 and was enrolled full time, at least 12 credits. I wasn't sure if it was a guarantee at first, but earlier on in the year I believe I heard the Minister of Education talking about it, and at the least he seemed to imply that it was a guarantee you would get this award once you met the prerequisites. I believe I also heard another MP, I think Desmond Edwards say the same thing in the hoa, earlier this year as well. Now of course, that all may have just been political speech, and may not be the reality.
But then that begs the question, then how is it chosen who gets and who doesn't, once one meets the requirement. If you have a higher number of BGCSE's, or you have higher grades, nothing else is mentioned, at least on the form I saw |

| Im sorry that happened to you but unfortunately there is no money so first come first serve. I was on the grant and just graduated. Because there is no money only a few will be granted that grant.. Keep trying, keep calling and praying. There is no money so, you are better off paying for yourself. But still try, make sure you have copies of whatever you paid....I cant even tell you who to call anyone because things are so tough. Call your representative...... make them do some work!!!!!!! |

You may very well be correct. But I thought I heard in the budget communcation that 7 million dollars was allocated toward scholarships, and that it was one of the few areas in which the govt. actually increased funding. I will have to check it up to ensure that, though. I guess, what I am saying, is that perhaps more investigation needs to be done or perhaps the standards raised to ensure that really the top performing students are the ones who benefit, and to also motivate other students from being mediocre in their studies. |
